4 Days In St. Croix 11

posted on: March 29, 2017

I've always known Peter to be someone who loves to document the moments. When we met, he always had a camera in hand, and was able to catch things that often elude others. He made me feel confident in front of his lens, in a way no one else could. When I look back on our earlier days together, I can see the obvious progression of confidence taking place in the images in both of our worlds.

When we met, he had just finished a job as a camera man on a local news station in his small town. And through various jobs, learning the technical aspects of small cameras, to large ones used on major film sets, his wealth of geeked-out knowledge has really inspired me. I don't get to see the that version of him as often as I'd like these days, but our trip to St. Croix gave both of us the perfect escape back into the worlds we once knew. It was like finding your home after being contently lost for a while. We were thrown into everything we love without common distractions, and nothing but our cameras, a journal, a book, and a few items of clothing.

Weeks before our trip, Peter purchased two Fuji cameras from his DP buddies for me to use for the site and anything else I needed. Our larger DSLR is amazing, but heavy and difficult to bring around. He had been telling me about the smaller Fuji cameras for years, but I am naturally reluctant to purchase anything shiny, new and expensive. Of course, he found his way around it all, and presented them both to me with this eagerness usually reserved for children on Christmas Day. I am so happy he did. Having he and I document this trip side by side (me with words and some images and him with the camera lugged across his body) was so beautiful–it's hard to explain.

While the words escape me, here are more photos from the trip, that I'd like to share....

P.S I'm putting together a guide for The Kitchn right now, so stay tuned for that.
